Reids Environmental Pledge:

At Reid, we’re not only concerned with making riding a bike accessible for everyone, by offering great value at incredibly competitive rates; we want to ensure that the environments and world we love to ride through stays sustainable. That’s why we have decided to make a pledge in taking an active role in tackling climate change, by planting a tree for every bike we sell.

This means that for every Reid bike purchased around the world we will plant a tree in their honour. We have responsibility as a good-manufacturing business to offset the carbon that we are using to make our already sustainable products, bikes and what better way to do this than planting a tree. With forests worldwide being chopped down and burnt for the use of man, we want to ensure that our children and our children’s children can still enjoy the outdoors as we have and as nature intended. This is more of a moral obligation for us than a business choice.

To make the biggest impact we can with our tree planting, we have partnered with the amazing edenprojects.org, who will be planting the trees on our behalf. They have planted more than 265 million trees since starting their project and we’re honoured to be the latest partner to contribute to this.

Eden Reforestation Projects is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to provide fair wage employment to impoverished villagers as agents of global forest restoration. They hire the poorest of the poor to grow, plant, and guard to maturity native species forest on a massive scale. Their “employ to plant methodology” results in a multiplication of positive socio-economic and environment measures. By the year 2020 their objective is to plant a minimum of 100 million trees each year and to offer hope through the employment of tens of thousands of people in countries where extreme poverty is rampant and we’re glad that we’re able to partner with them this year to make this happen.

When life is experienced in nature, we become healthier, more mindful, more focused people and we’re taking pleasure in launching our planting initiative, to help sustain these environments we love to live and ride for our future generations.

When partnering with edenprojects.org we decide to opt for their preferred method of donation, general planting. This not only allows them to spread the funds to wherever will have the most impact but means we will have the widest impact in planting trees across the globe. Eden projects are incredible at delivering solutions to help offset carbon emissions as much as possible and they do this most effectively through the planting of mangroves, which is the type of tree we will be planting the most of! Scientific studies have shown that Mangroves “sequester carbon at a rate two to four times greater than mature tropical forests”, and contain “the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems.” (Fatoyinbo et al, 2017). Mangroves are also a key part of coastal ecosystems, and “renowned for an array of ecosystem services, including fisheries and fibre production, sediment regulation, and storm/tsunami protection”. (Donato et al, 2011) The key to mangroves is the large amounts of biomass stored underground in the extensive root system. These roots support the large trees in muddy coastal areas where mangroves thrive. (Komiyama et al, 2008)
