Malcolm is one of our ambassadors at Evo Cycles and explains his professional career as well as his experiences with Evo Cycles.

What feeling do you get riding bikes?

A sense of freedom that I don’t get from other sports. Like I can explore the world, I can go wherever I want when I’m riding. I love that you can go into country roads or back roads that no one else knows. You can see how beautiful the country really is. I feel kinda alive and when I’m going really fast, smashing it around corners, I love it!

What have been the struggles in becoming a pro?

Jumping from age group to elite, it was insane, it’s still really hard! You go from winning an age group race to coming 50th in the middle of the pack. It’s super fast and aggressive, relentless. There’s no sitting up. You may be friends with other athletes but when you race it’s every man for themselves.Every time I race I have to have full confidence with myself, doubt doesn’t have a space in it. So I guess learning and changing my perspective towards what racing is as a pro has been really hard.

How did Evo help you?

Man Evo has been awesome! Evo helped me believe that I’m a great athlete. They’ve given me confidence. It’s really cool having a sponsor backing me when I bought my first ever bike from and I still go there weekly. The mechanics are so awesome, they look after me so well. Before a race The service centre boys fully suss my bike without any hesitation. The whole time I’ve been with them I’ve worn their kit. They are just so supportive of me achieving my dreams and being a part of Evo’s own growth too.

How is NZ different to abroad for training?

Because I know where to go. I know where to ride and the groups to go with. I have training partners and loops that I know inside out. Where as overseas you don’t have that familiarity. You have to look on google maps to find out what to do every day. I’m also home with my family and friends

Where have you competed?

This year I’ve been to Tahiti, Tasmania, China, Japan, Australia, Canada.

What is your first memory of riding a bike?

Trying to ride down my driveway with my eyes closed and I went straight into a pole and it hurt so much.

Why partner with Evo?

It’s my local bike shop. Everyone is so cool, everybody really looks after me there. I feel valued and like one of the team.
